CALAVERAS COUNTY -- A Danville man was killed Friday afternoon after his homemade amphibious plane crashed just south of the county airport.

Russell Hackler, 68, was killed after his single-engine, Coot A-Amphibian crashed into a hillside near the Calaveras County Airport.

Hackler was en route to the airport when his plane went down, according to Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

Fire crews arrived about 3:45 p.m. to find the plane "in total wreckage," according to Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant.

Hackler was the only person on board the plane, Berlant added.

An investigation is being conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to find out what caused Hackler to crash.

A Coot A-Amphibian is built through a kit and can land on and take off from water.
