Amid mounting speculation Saturday that Cal is discussing its football coaching vacancy with Louisiana Tech's Sonny Dykes, two of the people closest to him did little to cool the fervor.
But neither Kate Dykes, his wife, nor Spike Dykes, his father, would confirm the unsubstantiated internet reports.
Kate Dykes said her husband had been on the Louisiana Tech campus all weekend, hosting recruits. She said she didn't know if Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour, or anyone representing the school, had come to town. Asked if Cal had offered her husband a job, she said in a phone interview with this newspaper. "I don't think so. If they have, I don't know about it."
Spike Dykes, a longtime college coach, when asked if his son would be interested in Cal, said, "I would think so. Who wouldn't be in this business? It's a great job, a great conference."
The rumors about Cal and Dykes picked up steam after North Carolina State announced the hiring of Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren on Saturday. Dykes had been a candidate for the N.C. State job.
