SAN LEANDRO -- Police said a good Samaritan chased a man after he watched the suspect steal a cell phone out of 62-year-old man's pocket.
Officers were called at 3:08 p.m. Saturday to 1300 Fairmont Drive after someone dialed 911 and told dispatchers they saw a witness chasing a pick-pocket on foot near Fairmont Square, said Lt. Jeff Tudor.
When officers arrived, they spoke with the victim who said a mangrabbed his cell phone from his pants pocket. The witness who chased the suspect told police that he was last seen near a Burger King at 15050 East 14th St. Shortly after, officers located a man who matched the suspect description exitingthe restaurant.
The man, determined by police to be Jovann Augustus, 20, of Hayward, was identified as the suspect and arrested on suspicion of grand theft from a person.
The victim's phone was recovered when Augustus dropped it during the chase by the witness, Tudor said.
"The extraordinary efforts by the witnesses in this case lead to the arrest of a suspect who targeted the vulnerability of the 62-year-old victim," Tudor said. "This type of involvement demonstrates commitment to community, and is great example of how important it is for all of us to work together to improve public safety and quality of life."
