SAN JOSE -- Two South San Jose schools were locked down for an hour Thursday after nearby home burglars made off with a gun that was eventually recovered, police said.
A resident from the 5600 block of Herma Street called police around noon to report that two people broke into his home and stole a loaded handgun, Officer Albert Morales said. The victim said the burglars fled in a vehicle.
Because of the burglary's proximity to Oak Grove High School and Miner Elementary School, police ordered the campuses to lock their doors while officers searched the area. About an hour later, police found the weapon in the back yard of the burglary victim's home, and the lockdown was lifted.
Morales said investigators are following leads on the identities and location of the suspects. Further details were not released.
