Alameda wins Fairfield tournament

  • The Alameda High boys basketball team edged Fairfield 58-56 on Dec. 22 to win the Brett Callan Memorial Tournament. The Hornets were paced in scoring in the championship game by tournament most valuable player Sam Kunz, who scored 17 points. Keelan Doss and Cunningham also were named all-tournament for Alameda.

    Alameda County team edged in all-star football game

  • The Alameda County All-Stars fell behind 16-6 to Contra Costa County in the second quarter of the Holiday Classic All-Star football game in Pittsburg on Dec. 22, and eventually lost 23-20. Berkeley High kicker Sam Boyden connected on both of his point-after-touchdown attempts for the Alameda County squad (the team attempted a two-point conversion pass on its other score). Alameda High's Chris Bussey caught one pass for three years for the Alameda County team.

    Piedmont reaches tourney title game

  • The Piedmont High boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Piedmont Holiday Invitational, where it fell 55-43 to Half Moon Bay on Dec. 22. James Ormond had eight points and eight rebounds in the championship game and was named all-tournament. So was Dylan James-Kavanaugh, who had a team-high 13 points in the championship game. Teammate Aidan Davison was also named all-tournament.

    El Cerrito defeats Enterprise-Redding

  • The El Cerrito High boys basketball team used a strong second quarter to take control of visiting Enterprise-Redding and win the nonleague game 56-46 on Dec. 21. Jovante Carleton led the Gauchos with 18 points, and teammate Rae Jackson added 15 points. El Cerrito improved to 8-2 in this young season with the victory.

  • West Coast Jamboree, girls basketball, Dec. 27-29, 31, 9:30 a.m. -- A number of local teams will be competing in this huge tournament, which has 14 divisions.

    Stars of the week

  • Sam Kunz, Alameda boys basketball -- Kunz scored a team-high 17 points in the Brett Callan Memorial Tournament championship game, which Alameda won 58-56, and was named tournament MVP.

  • Jovante Carleton, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Carleton, a junior wing, scored a game-high 18 points in the Gauchos' 56-46 victory over Enterprise-Redding on Dec. 21.

  • Gabby Green, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Green scored a team-high 15 points and had six steals in the Panthers' 55-49 win over Christ the King-New York in the first round of the Nike Tournament of Champions Joe Smith Division on Dec. 20.

  • Dylan James-Kavanaugh, Piedmont boys basketball -- James-Kavanaugh scored a team-high 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in the Highlanders' 55-43 loss to Half Moon Bay in the championship game of the Piedmont Holiday Invitational.

  • Ivan Rabb, Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball -- Rabb scored a game-high 22 points in the Dragons' 59-46 victory over Pinnacle-Phoenix, Ariz. on Dec. 22 at the Tarkanian Classic and was named all-tournament.

  • London Robinson, Oakland Tech girls basketball -- Robinson scored a team-high 14 points and also had 14 rebounds in Tech's 51-50 nonleague victory over Rodriguez-Fairfield on Dec. 20.
