BART trains will run until 3 a.m. on New Year's Eve, and extra staff and trains will be in service to help people return from festivities.
The system will operate on a normal weekday eveningschedule, with trains every 20 minutes, and additional trains will be used on lines to and from San Francisco on New Year's Eve to ease crowding at the Embarcadero and Montgomery Street stations, where a large turnout is expected for the fireworks show downtown.
Beginning at 8 p.m., BART will use a "skip-stop" system on trains into and out of San Francisco. Trains on the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond lines will not stop at Embarcadero Station, meaning the closest stop before and after the fireworks show will be the Montgomery Street station.
Trains on the Dublin/Pleasanton and Fremont lines will stop at Embarcadero Station but not at Montgomery Street.
Trains from Millbrae and Daly City will make all stops in San Francisco.
The agency advises passengers to buy round-trip tickets in advance or use Clipper cards with sufficient fare to avoid lines at ticket machines.
BART will operate on a Sunday timetable on New Year's Day, with service beginning at 8 a.m.
