Katherine R. Smith Elementary in San Jose received $11,000 to help purchase school supplies for socio-economically disadvantaged students.
The Santa Clara County Realtors Foundation organized a pumpkin auction to raise funds for the school and received thousands of dollars in donations within hours of the auction.
Despite Smith Elementary having been given the award of being a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School for its achievements, many of the students face difficult economic challenges. About 65 percent of these students are Hispanic and Asian and are from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds they live below the poverty line and their parents have not graduated high school.
The money raised by the Realtors' foundation is meant to give the students an opportunity to attain academic achievements despite socioeconomic hardships, according to Barbara Lymberis, president of the Santa Clara County Association of Realtors.
"The rapid response from our members shows that education is an issue near and dear to their hearts," she said.
