EL SOBRANTE -- Authorities are investigating whether a man who died Tuesday from a gunshot committed suicide or was the victim of an attack, a Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

A deputy responded to a 5:37 p.m. call reporting that a man armed with a handgun was arguing with someone in an apartment in the 4600 block of Appian Way, said Sgt. David Adams. The deputy arrived at the apartment complex within a few minutes and heard a gunshot, Adams said.

Witnesses in the apartment told deputies that, following the argument, the armed man went into the bathroom by himself. Moments later, they heard a gunshot, Adams said.

The man, who was in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

Deputies recovered the handgun used in the shooting, authorities said. No arrests have been made.

Investigators are trying to determine more details about the argument and whether the gunshot was self-inflicted or fired during an attack, Adams said.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call the Sheriff's Office at 925-313-2600.
