SAN LEANDRO -- In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., children and teens ages 6 to 17 are invited to share messages of peace, tolerance and social justice at San Leandro's Oratorical Festival on Jan. 21.

Participants may perform a poem, an original or well-known essay, or deliver a speech for a chance to win $100 or $50 Amazon gift cards paid for by the San Leandro Optimist Club.

The festival is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21 at the Marina Community Center. Light refreshments will be provided.

Scoring will be based on creativity, expression, articulation and stage presence. Performances must be recited from memory and costumes and props are not allowed. Song and musical performances are not eligible.

Applications must be returned to the city's recreation and human services department by the newly extended Jan. 14 deadline. Registration forms can be found on the city's website.
