SAN JOSE -- The Earthquakes could find out quickly if they are title contenders while facing five tough opponents in March according to the 2013 Major League Soccer scheduled unveiled Wednesday.
The reigning Supporters' Shield champions open the season March 3 at Buck Shaw Stadium against Real Salt Lake and then play host to the New York Red Bulls the next Sunday. San Jose also plays host to the Seattle Sounders on March 23 and visits Columbus and Houston in March.
The 34-game regular season ends Oct. 26. The Earthquakes are scheduled to play in nine nationally televised games and return to Stanford Stadium for the third consecutive year where they will face defending MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy on June 29.
San Jose plays five of its first eight matches at Buck Shaw, where it went undefeated through the regular season last year.
But schedule markers also are challenging the Quakes with six out of seven road matches between May 25 and July 6. The trip ends with games at Chicago and New England in four days.
The Quakes report to training camp next week with full practice starting Jan. 21. The club will open camp without five regulars, including star Chris Wondolowski, because of national team call-ups.
The team also will participate in the U.S. Open Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League tournament this year. It is expected to schedule some exhibition matches against international competition but has yet to announce
