Margaret Dixon, a retired Oakland police officer, is one of four people nationwide honored as Give Back Day "heroes" -- a program that honors the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dixon is an instructor at Merritt College and board president of the Oakland Police Activities League, which provides sports and after-school activities for at-risk youth. Dixon also founded and coached the league's track team.

"Margaret Dixon is an outstanding individual who keeps Dr. King's legacy alive through her unwavering devotion to bettering the greater Oakland community, said Vicky Dinges of Allstate Insurance Company, which sponsors the "Give Back Day" program.
