FREMONT -- The Fremont Police Department is offering teenagers a volunteer program in which they can learn more about law enforcement while earning community service hours.

Participants in the Fremont Explorer Program -- eligible to teenagers ages 14 to 18 -- are asked to donate 5 to 20 hours per month, including giving tours, providing traffic control and working at special Fremont police events.

All new volunteers are required to attend a one-week Explorer Academy in Southern California before joining the program, police said.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 8.
