HERCULES -- Plans for Hercules' defunct Market Hall will have to work around a petroleum pipeline on the eastern periphery of the 6.62-acre site.
"No one can build anything on top of that easement area except surface level parking," said John McNellis, a principal at Palo Alto-based McNellis Partners, which bought the site from The Red Barn Co. of Newport Beach in November. "Any design must be done around it."
McNellis has not said what his firm wants to do with the site, once intended as Phase I of a mixed-use Hercules New Town Center, but he has all but ruled out residences and offices development as well as multistory structures and mixed-use development.
McNellis Partners will host a community meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hercules Senior Center, next to Hercules City Hall, 111 Civic Drive, to introduce itself and solicit input.
Market Hall is at Sycamore and San Pablo avenues near the Interstate 80-Highway 4 interchange. The pipeline runs along the I-80 frontage of the property; the freeway is elevated.
