HAYWARD -- A 78-year-old man who left for the pharmacy Saturday evening and never made it to the store was found safe in Fremont Sunday afternoon, police said.

Donald Oryall was found in the neighboring city about 4 p.m., Hayward police Sgt Mark Ormsby said. Oryall has since returned home to his family, although authorities recommended he be taken to the hospital to be examined since he stayed in his car overnight.

Oryall left his home near Huntwood Avenue and Tennyson Road about 9:30 p.m. to pick up a prescription for his wife at the CVS pharmacy at 243 West Jackson St., Ormsby said. The man never returned home, and was later found to have never made it to the pharmacy.

Relatives told police that Oryall was frail and had gotten lost while driving in the past. Based on that information, and below freezing temperatures overnight, Hayward police issued a statewide alert to all state law enforcement agencies and various media outlets to help find the missing man, Ormsby said.

The alert led to a tip about Oryall's whereabouts.
