Fast start leads Highlanders to win

  • The Piedmont High boys basketball team took a 21-11 lead in the first quarter on its way to a 62-48 victory over Alameda in a West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline game on Jan. 12. Piedmont's Adam Wuebbens had an outstanding game with 22 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Teammates James Ormond and Dylan James-Kavanaugh scored 16 and 15 points respectively, and the 6-foot-6 Ormond also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked five shots.

    Gauchos defeat St. Patrick-St. Vincent

  • The El Cerrito High boys basketball team bolted out to a 19-7 first-quarter lead on their way to a 74-58 victory over St. Patrick-St. Vincent in a Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division game on Jan. 11. The Gauchos' Tyrell Alcorn scored a game-high 24 points and added five steals. Teammate Rae Jackson added 17 points, eight assists and four rebounds in the victory, as the Gauchos improved to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in league play with the win.

    Hornets' defense keys WACC victory


  • The Alameda High boys basketball team allowed Tennyson only a combined 13 points in the second and third quarters on their way to a 55-40 victory in West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division play on Jan. 9. Max Jacobs led a balanced Hornets scoring effort with 14 points, and also grabbed 13 rebounds. Teammate Keelan Doss added 13 points.

  • Salesian vs. St. Mary's at Saint Mary's College, girls basketball, Jan. 18, 8:30 p.m. -- The two rivals, currently ranked No. 6 and No. 2 respectively in the Bay Area News Group East Bay Girls Basketball Poll, meet in a showdown in Moraga.

  • Bishop O'Dowd vs. Brookside Christian-Stockton at Pittsburg High, girls basketball, Jan. 19, 5:30 p.m. -- The Dragons travel to face a 14-2 Knights squad in the MLK "Let Freedom Ring" Shootout.

  • St. Joseph Notre Dame at El Cerrito, boys basketball, Jan. 4, 7 p.m. -- The Pilots and the Gauchos, who are both currently ranked in the Bay Area News Group East Bay Boys Basketball Poll, face each other in a Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division showdown.

  • Haley Bitzer, College Prep girls basketball -- Bitzer scored more than half of the Cougars' points in a 58-33 win over Bentley on Jan. 9. She produced 30 points in the win.

  • Asha Thomas, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Thomas scored a game-high 18 points and added five assists and four rebounds in the Dragons' 67-49 victory over St. Mary's on Jan. 12.

  • Adam Wuebbens, Piedmont boys basketball -- Wuebbens scored 22 points, passed for eight assists and grabbed four rebounds in the Highlanders' 62-48 win over Alameda on Jan. 12.

  • Tyrell Alcorn, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Alcorn produced a game-high 24 points and had five steals in a 74-58 win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent. He also had a game-high 28 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in a 56-53 victory over St. Joseph Notre Dame on Jan. 9.

  • Lamont Banks, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Banks scored a game-high 17 points in a 59-55 victory over St. Mary's on Jan. 11.

  • Marie Bertholdt, Alameda girls basketball -- Bertholdt produced another double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, and added six steals and five assists in a 59-21 victory over Castro Valley on Jan. 11.
