OAKLAND -- A 65-year-old man was struck and injured by an Amtrak train while walking near the tracks Thursday afternoon in East Oakland, authorities said.

Witnesses told police that the man was walking very close to the tracks near 38th Avenue and Wattling Street not far from Interstate 880 in East Oakland.

As the train approached about 12:23 p.m., the engineer blew the train's horn to warn the man away, but he did not move until the last second, and was clipped by the passing train, a Capitol Corridor spokeswoman said.

He was injured, but his condition was not available late Thursday, police said.

The train, which was bound for San Jose, took another quarter- to half-mile to come to a complete stop. Trains were delayed throughout the region as officials investigated and a new engineer was brought on board to finish the route, according to Capitol Corridor spokeswoman Luna Salaver. Service has been restored to normal.

The incident is under investigation by the railroad police.
