SAN LEANDRO -- The man shot and killed this weekend in front of the Bay Fair BART station was apparently a bystander caught in the crossfire of a shootout, police said Sunday.
The man, whose name wasn't released, was seemingly not involved in the dispute that led to gunfire at a bus stop around 12:20 p.m., said BART police Lt. Michael Hayes. The man, 50, was pronounced dead at the BART station, which is on Hesperian Boulevard. Police initially said he was 40.
It appears two rival groups ran into each other at the station, words were exchanged and the shooting started, police said. The attack also left a woman with wounds that weren't considered life threatening and one unidentified suspect in police custody.
Hayes said detectives were reviewing surveillance footage and following up on leads in the incident. Authorities have not released any information about the people involved or what may have sparked the violence.
The Bay Fair station was closed until just after 6 p.m.
