FREMONT -- A 20-year-old Union City man is in critical condition after the car he was driving slammed into a tree in Fremont on Sunday, police said.

Officers responded just before 4 p.m. to the intersection of Ardenwood Boulevard and Kaiser Drive for a single-vehicle crash with injury, said police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.

When police and fire crews arrived, firefighters had to extricate the man from the car, Bosques said. The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed the man was traveling southbound on Ardenwood Boulevard when he lost control of the car and struck the tree just south of Kaiser Drive, Bosques said.

It does not appear drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, said Officer Lan Tran, but results of a toxicology test are pending.

Traffic was backed up in the area for a time as emergency crews were on the scene. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police at 510-790-6800.
