A San Francisco man died when the 2012 Mitsubishi Galant he was driving on westbound Interstate Highway 80 in Vacaville went off the right side of the road and struck a tree this morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The Solano County coroner's office identified him as 25-year-old Brandon Bernier. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, coroner's deputy Jackson Harris said.

A passenger in the vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CHP Officer Peter Eckhardt said.

Initial reports indicated that the silver Mitsubishi went off the right side of the road east of Mason Street and struck a tree around 8:25 a.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

Bernier was pronounced dead at 8:34 a.m., Harris said.
