OAKLAND -- A solution to the epic Lake Merritt dog park battle appears within reach. The city is proposing that a half-acre of Snow Park be turned into a fenced dog park.
The facility would be included as part of a park revitalization and expansion already planned for the park at 19th and Harrison streets.
A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Lakeside Garden Center, 666 Bellevue Ave.
The dog park had for years been slated to take up part of the grassy field at the corner of Lakeshore Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard at the southeastern edge of Lake Merritt. However, there was substantial opposition from neighbors, and last month the council failed to muster enough votes to approve the proposal.
The Snow Park option emerged after Mayor Jean Quan initiated a search for an alternative site near Lake Merritt that would not face staunch opposition.
