SAN PABLO -- After a month-long hunt, police have arrested a man who is accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend a few days before Christmas.

San Pablo resident Donte Smith was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with murder in the death of Dejuan McDonald, 30, of Pinole, and with the attempted murder of 24-year-old Schylon Stewart, his ex-girlfriend.

Police said Smith, 24, ambushed Stewart and McDonald with a handgun as they drove through the 1700 block of Rumrill Boulevard in San Pablo. Stewart was not injured.

Police investigators found Smith's black 1996 Nissan Sentra on Tuesday, hidden in an apartment complex parking garage in the 500 block of 21st Street in Richmond.

Both license plates had been removed from the vehicle, police said, so officers began surveillance on the complex and roughly two hours later, Smith was arrested as he left an apartment.

Police said Smith had cut off his dreadlocks since the December incident.

Smith is the father of Stewart's 3-year-old daughter. Police said Stewart had a restraining order against Smith, but it was not renewed by a judge the day before the shooting.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Detective Shawn Ray at 510-215-3150.
