MARTINEZ-- A 46-year-old Pittsburg man was found dead on Friday in his cell at the Contra Costa County Jail of an apparent medical problem, a sheriff's spokesman said.
Sheriff's deputies at the jail were notified of the unresponsive man by another inmate about 4:10 a.m., and jail medical staff immediately began trying to save the man, Contra Costa sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said. Crews from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District arrived at the jail shortly after and continued the life-saving efforts, but pronounced the man dead at 4:27 a.m.
The inmate, who is not being identified pending notification of the family, had several preexisting medical conditions, Lee said. The incident will be investigated by the sheriff's office and Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, following county protocol after in-custody deaths.
