RICHMOND -- Police in Richmond are investigating the city's first homicide of 2013 after a man was found slain early Monday near the Lucas Park and Playground.

Police have identified the victim as William Wheeler, 26, of Richmond.

A police shot spotter recorded shots fired near the park, located at 10th Street and Lucas Avenue, about 3 a.m. Monday, said Detective Nicole Abetkov.

When police arrived, a person directed officers to the body, Abetkov said. Police did not say who that person was.

No other details were immediately. A motive has not been released and no one has been arrested in connection with the killing.

While Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose saw homicides jump last year, Richmond saw a decline in killings.

Last year, Richmond had 18 homicides, down from 26 in 2011. Monday's killing was the first homicide in Richmond since Andre Cross, 34, was shot multiple times when he walked out of a house in the 2800 block of McBryde Avenue on the night of Nov. 28, 2012.
