LIVERMORE -- Police have released the names of two East County men who were arrested last month allegedly with a Contra Costa Times newspaper hold list that has been tied to at least one home burglary.
Patrick Piazza, 27, of Bethel Island, and Morgan Scales, 21, of Antioch, were arrested Jan. 13 by Livermore police on charges of possessing burglary tools. Police said the pair tried to steal an idling car sitting in a driveway next to a Livermore home they intended to burglarize.
The men were driving a car reported stolen during a home burglary in Walnut Creek, police said. Police said they also found a Contra Costa Times vacation hold list in the back of the car; the list contained the addresses of subscribers who had requested the temporary suspension of newspaper service while they were away on vacation.
The Walnut Creek home was included on the list.
Walnut Creek police are investigating whether the list could have been used to burglarize other homes of Times' subscribers. The newspaper is also conducting an internal investigation into the matter and has put new measures in place to protect subscribers.
Neither man is a current or former employee of the newspaper, nor are they contractors, police and newspaper officials said.
Both men remain in Santa Rita Jail, and each is facing one count of possession of burglary tools. Scales is being held on $150,000 bail. No bail is set for Piazza, who is also accused of violating
No one else has been arrested in connection with the incident.
