RICHMOND -- Motorists can expect traffic delays at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge toll plaza at times from Friday night through March 5 during installation of new toll collection equipment.

The first delays could happen over the next two weekends, starting at 8 p.m. Friday. One lane will be closed on the westbound Interstate 80 approach to the bridge before the toll plaza.

Various closures of one toll lane at a time will occur on weekdays from Feb. 19 through March 5, delaying motorists by up to 15 minutes, said officials at Caltrans and the Bay Area Toll Authority. Weekend delays will be shorter, they said.

The agencies will replace old equipment that collects tolls electronically, and tracks tolls collected automatically by FasTrak and manually by toll takers, bridge officials said.
