Headed to college

  • Many local athletes signed letters of intent with universities last week. Among the signees for football were St. Mary's Caleb Coleman (Cal), Bishop O'Dowd's Kevin King (Washington), Shaka Kendricks (Howard) and Joshua Licup (William Penn), and El Cerrito's Marcellus Pippins (Washington State). There were a number of girls soccer signees, including many Bishop O'Dowd players: Ryan Daniel (Hawaii), Bianca Lowe (Cal State Northridge), Darby Nordin (Chico State), Kate Ranahan (UC Davis) and Ryan Walker-Hartshorn (Stanford). Other girls soccer signees included Alameda's Reyna Buzon (Cal State Stanislaus), St. Mary's Jessica Jara (Santa Clara), Berkeley's Nathalie Marie (Stanford) and El Cerrito's Emma Tinloy (UC Davis). Bishop O'Dowd's Alexis Carney signed with UC Davis to play softball, and another Dragon, Eugene Hamilton III, signed with Arizona for track and field. Head-Royce boys soccer player Alex Sommer is headed to Cornell.

    Local soccer teams qualify for playoffs

  • Both boys and girls soccer teams from Berkeley, Bishop O'Dowd, Albany and St. Mary's qualified for the North Coast Section playoffs, which started on Feb. 13. Results of those first-round matches were not available at press time. Berkeley is the No. 3 seed in Division I girls and No. 5 seed in Division I boys. Many local teams will compete in the Division II bracket. In the girls competition, Bishop O'Dowd is the No. 1 seed with Piedmont (No. 6), Encinal (No. 9), Albany (No. 12) and St. Mary's (No. 13) also in the bracket. In the Division II boys bracket, Bishop O'Dowd is the No. 5 seed with St. Mary's (No. 8), Albany (No. 13) and Piedmont (No. 16) also in the playoffs.

  • NCS playoff quarterfinals, boys and girls soccer, Feb. 16, TBA -- Berkeley's boys and girls teams (Division I), Bishop O'Dowd's boys and girls teams (Division II) as well as St. Mary's boys and Piedmont's girls (both Division II) were all the higher seeds in their first-round matches.

  • Tri-County Athletic League tournament championships, girls and boys basketball, Feb. 16, 5 p.m. -- Salesian and St. Mary's are the No. 1 seeds in the boys and girls playoffs respectively and have a very good chance of reaching the championship games at El Cerrito High. The girls championship game will start at 5 p.m. and the boys championship game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start.

  • Justin Brown, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Brown scored a game-high 16 points in the Pilots' 64-16 victory over John Swett in the first round of the TCAL playoffs on Feb. 7.

  • Sam Kunz, Alameda boys basketball -- Kunz poured in 29 points, including four 3-pointers, and grabbed 14 rebounds in a 62-43 win over Tennyson on Feb. 6. He also scored a game-high 23 points in the Hornets' 74-60 win over Arroyo on Feb. 8.

  • Oderah Chidom, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- The Duke-bound Chidom scored a team-high 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had three blocks in the Dragons' 80-59 nonleague victory over St. Mary's-Stockton on Feb. 9.

  • Henry Cornelious, Berkeley boys basketball -- Cornelious scored a game-high 15 points in the Yellowjackets 44-33 win over San Lorenzo on Feb. 7.

  • JoNae Gonzales, Piedmont girls basketball -- Gonzales had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Highlanders' 65-54 overtime victory over Castro Valley on Feb. 6.

  • Gabby Green, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Green scored a team-high 21 points and also had eight rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals in the Panthers' 59-53 victory over Salesian on Feb. 6. She also had 16 points in St. Mary's 66-48 victory over Eastside Prep-East Palo Alto on Feb. 9.

  • Tre James, El Cerrito boys basketball -- James scored 10 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had four blocks in an 83-45 victory over Pinole Valley on Feb. 5.

  • London Robinson, Oakland Tech girls basketball -- Robinson produced 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in Tech's 58-51 victory over Skyline on Feb. 6.
