Suspects fleeing a Mill Valley grocery store with stolen beer early Sunday morning fired on a security guard as he pursued their getaway vehicle, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.
Three men stole two cases of beer from the Safeway store on Redwood Highway Frontage Road around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, then jumped into a gold minivan and fled, Sheriff's Lt. Doug Pittman said. A security guard called police and reported the incident as he followed the suspects in hopes of getting the van's license plate number.
The van drove northbound on the frontage road toward Tiburon Boulevard, Pittman said. As the guard got closer to the van, he heard four or five gunshots and backed away in fear, the guard told police.
The suspects ran the red light at the intersection of the frontage road and Tiburon Boulevard and got onto the northbound onramp onto Highway 101, followed by the security guard. The suspects drove north, took the Paradise Drive exit and then headed back southbound on Highway 101. At that point, the security guard lost sight of them, police said.
The security guard gave the van's license plate number as 4DWZY. Anyone with information about the theft should call the sheriff's office at (415) 473-7265. Tipsters can also call the Bay Area Crime Stoppers hotline at (800) 222-8477, where they can leave information anonymously and possibly qualify for a cash reward, Pittman said.
