Section basketball playoffs begin Many local teams were seeded in the North Coast Section basketball playoffs. Among the teams that earned top-three seeds were both the Bishop O'Dowd High boys and girls squads (both No. 1 seeds in Division III), St. Joseph Notre Dame boys (No. 1, Division V), St. Mary's girls (No. 1, Division IV), El Cerrito boys (No. 3, Division III), Alameda girls (No. 4, Division II), Head-Royce boys (No. 4, Division V) and Piedmont girls (No. 4, Division IV).
O'Dowd star named All-American Bishop O'Dowd High girls basketball star Oderah Chidom will be competing in the McDonald's All-American Game on April 3 in Chicago. Chidom is the first East Bay girls basketball player to be selected to play in this game since 2009. The Duke-bound Chidom is ranked among the top 10 players in the country for the class of 2013.
Piedmont Sports Hall of Fame nominations The Piedmont Sports Hall of Fame will be soliciting nominations from the public until May 15 for its next induction class of 2013-2014. Former athletes, coaches, administrators and current community members are eligible for consideration, provided that they meet the criteria. Nominations must be submitted in writing and signed to Rich Kitchens, Principal, Piedmont High School, 800 Magnolia Avenue, Piedmont, CA 94611.
On deck NCS playoff quarterfinals, boys and girls basketball, Feb. 22-23, TBA -- Bishop O'Dowd's boys and girls teams, and El Cerrito's boys team, all received first-round byes in the Division III playoffs and will host quarterfinal games on Feb. 22. The Dragons will have a doubleheader, with the girls game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys game at 8 p.m. El Cerrito's game will start at 7 p.m. NCS championships, wrestling, Feb. 22-23, Newark Memorial High -- The best wrestlers in the North Coast Section will converge on Newark, looking to finish in the top three in their weight classes to qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships. NCS finals, boys and girls soccer, Feb. 23, TBA -- There is certain to be at least one local team in the Division II girls final, as Bishop O'Dowd, Piedmont and St. Mary's all qualified for the semifinals on Feb. 20. Results of all semifinals were not available at press time. Other local teams that qualified for the semifinals included Berkeley's girls in Division I and the St. Mary's boys in Division II.
Stars of the week Erin Greening, Piedmont girls soccer -- The sophomore scored the winning goal in the 77th minute to lift the Highlanders to a 1-0 victory over Dublin in the quarterfinals of the NCS Division II playoffs on Feb. 16. Ivan Rabb, Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball -- Rabb had a spectacular triple-double with 40 points, 18 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 68-65 O'Dowd victory over Castro Valley on Feb. 15. Darrien Washington, Skyline girls basketball -- Washington had 12 points, 19 rebounds and 7 blocks in the Titans' 53-48 victory over Oakland on Feb. 15. Max Jacobs, Alameda boys basketball -- Jacobs scored a team-high 18 points in the Hornets' 69-53 win over Hayward on Feb. 15. Justyce Key, Berkeley boys basketball -- Key produced a game-high 19 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the Yellowjackets' 57-47 win over Mt. Eden on Feb. 15. Lucia Lecce, St. Mary's girls soccer -- Lecce, a senior goalkeeper, saved 10 shots in regulation, four shots in overtime and two penalty kicks in the shootout in St. Mary's opening-round upset of No. 4 seed Miramonte on Feb. 13 in the NCS Division II playoffs. She then produced another 10 saves in regulation, three saves in overtime and two saves on penalty kicks in the shootout for a Panthers victory over Albany in the quarterfinals on Feb. 16. St. Mary's is the No. 13 seed, and Albany is the No. 12 seed. Anthony Sullen, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Sullen scored a game-high 18 points in the Gauchos' 65-51 loss to Salesian in the Tri-County Athletic League playoff championship game on Feb. 16. Temidayo Yussef, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Yussef scored a game-high 21 points in the Pilots' 53-50 loss to El Cerrito in a Tri-County Athletic League playoff semifinal game on Feb. 14.
