OAKLAND -- A 56-year-old handyman is expected to recover after being shot in the chest Thursday morning by a woman resident of a house he was working at who mistook him for an intruder, police said.

The 39-year-old woman, whose name was withheld by police, was being interviewed Thursday night by investigators. The handyman's name was also withheld.

He was at a hospital in critical but stable condition.

The shooting happened about 9:50 a.m. at a house in the 1700 block of 79th Avenue, a residential area of East Oakland.

The handyman was at the home to do some work, and was outside at the side of the house when he was shot. The woman had not been informed he would be working at the house Thursday morning. Police said the woman thought someone was breaking into the houses, got a pistol and shot the man through a window. The woman's house was burglarized in 2007, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
