WALNUT CREEK -- An actor who has performed on stage and worked in other roles at the Lesher Center for the Arts turned himself in Friday on charges that he sexually assaulted two underage girls last fall, according to police and prosecutors.

The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office charged 27-year-old Jason Pedroza on Wednesday with two felonies -- using a minor for a sex act and contacting a minor for the purpose of engaging in lewd and lascivious behavior -- and misdemeanor sexual battery and child molestation.

The DA's office would not reveal the girls' ages or how Pedroza knew the alleged victims.

Pedroza turned himself in to a Martinez courtroom on Friday. He was arraigned and freed after posting $40,000 bail.

Pleasant Hill police, which began investigating Pedroza in November, said Pedroza contacted minors inappropriately via text and through social media networks. The nature of the messages was not disclosed.

Pedroza worked as an actor with the Center Repertory Company and also held several other positions during productions at the Lesher Center, police said. He also worked at a ballet school on North Main Street in Walnut Creek. He was listed as one of the actors taking part in the company's production of "A Christmas Carol" at the Lesher Center in December.

Calls to the Center Repertory Company and The Ballet School were not immediately returned.

Walnut Creek police are asking parents of children who may have had contact with Pedroza to talk to their children about him. If any inappropriate contact is suspected, parents should call the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-943-588.
