A man and woman were arrested Sunday after they carjacked a Mercedes and crashed it in the parking lot of a Union City shopping center, police said.

Cornelius Smith, 18, and an unidentified 18-year-old Oakland woman took a gold Mercedes S420 from its owner on Curtner Road in Fremont about 12:45 p.m., according to police. The two then took off toward Mission Boulevard.

Officers set up lookout posts throughout Fremont, and one officer stationed on northbound Interstate 880 and Fremont Boulevard saw the Mercedes traveling north on I-880, police said. Officers followed the car off the freeway onto Alvarado/Niles Boulevard and tried to make a traffic stop near the Lowes store at Union Landing, police said.

The woman driving the car did not stop, police said, and headed into the shopping center's parking lot, where she lost control and collided with several parked cars. One woman was hospitalized with minor injuries after the crash.

The suspect then fled into the shopping center, where officers caught here after a short footchase.

Witnesses at the shopping center helped direct police toward Smith, the passenger in the car, and they arrested him minutes after nabbing the driver, police said.

Both were arrested on suspicion of felony carjacking, and the driver also is expected to be charged with felony hit-and-run, police said.
