Challenge to tax on bags is needed

How is it that the required 10-cent charge for a paper bag is not an unconstitutional tax? A tax that the Alameda County voters never approved. And when the Waste Management Authority decides to raise this tax to a dollar a bag -- what then?

Are there any ongoing court challenges to this tax?

What statute authorized the Waste Management Authority to be able to unilaterally impose this tax on Alameda County residents? What other taxes has the Waste Management Authority imposed?

What action(s) would be required by Alameda County voters to rescind this taxing authority?

Modern weapons are vastly different

In 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. I can't help thinking had they only known we were less than five years away from developing a weapon that would level a city with one bomb, would they have acted as they did?

I ask the same question of our Founding Fathers. Had they known what sort of weapons would be available to the public today, would the Second Amendment only be 27 words long?

Children should take a bow for oratory

Lafayette Elementary School located in Oakland took first place at the second Regional MLK Jr. Oratorical Fest. The event was held at Acts Full Gospel Church on Feb. 15.

This means that every individual class at Lafayette Elementary School that participated in the event won its own first place award for its performance.

Children, we share in your success. Take time to feel great joy and pride for the city of Oakland, pride for the community, and special pride for Lafayette Elementary School.

It takes a village. Children, congratulations, take a bow.

Let's talk about who is being bullied

Leave "Mallard Fillmore" alone and right where it is. It is not only on point and hilarious, it has induced significant humor in readers' letter responses.

For instance, a Feb. 19 letter says, "Mallard's a bully." Really? Who's he pickin' on? The politicians who sold us this bill of goods? Poor babies.

Head Start? It was sold as a way to reduce poverty via enhancement of educational success, not, as suggested, simply taxpayers providing day care. So, if all Head Start has turned out to be is day care, then it is a failure. Period. Who's the idiot here?

Last I looked, the U.S. was an attempt at a meritocracy. So, you want to take my wealth, what little there is, and give it away? Now that's hilarious. Who's being bullied now?

Victims should file suit over guns

Regarding the National Rifle Association and assault weapon manufacturers:

All the victims and relatives shot by assault weapons should file a class-action lawsuit against the NRA and the manufacturers of assault weapons, and bankrupt them into infamy.

Cartoon offensive to Republican Party

I didn't appreciate the Feb. 19 editorial cartoon. The Carnival cruise ship that broke down at sea and failed so miserably in showing a good time to 3,000 vacationers had nothing to do with the Republican Party.

Why would the paper run a cartoon aimed at denigrating the Republican Party when many readers, I presume, are members of the Republican Party? The paper rarely runs cartoons putting down Democrats, yet chose to run a cartoon about a ship that was totally nonpolitical, and add the paper's own spin by equating Republicans with a "floating sewer."

I am offended. Real news can be gotten elsewhere -- even unbiased reporting is still available if one looks for it outside of this newspaper.
