Stone Temple Pilots fired singer Scott Weiland.

According to TMZ, the band released a statement Wednesday saying "Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland."

Well ... there you have it.

The band gave no explanation as to why Weiland was canned, though the former Velvet Revolver singer has a long history of substance abuse issues.

Funny enough, Weiland this week denied rumors he was leaving the band, telling Rolling Stone "STP has not broken up. I haven't quit. I haven't been fired."

Yes, you have.

TMZ said rumors of a split began a couple of months ago, when Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash said Stone Temple Pilots had fired Weiland. The band reformed in 2008 after a five-year layoff, during which Weiland was in Velvet Revolver. He still hasn't been replaced, though Velvet Revolver hasn't officially disbanded.

Weiland is reportedly set to launch a solo tour next month.
