The visiting Dublin High girls basketball team held on --barely -- for a 54-50 victory over Alameda in a North Coast Section Division II quarterfinal playoff game on Feb. 22.
Milan Moses scored 22 points to lead Dublin (20-8), which took a 13-point lead in the third quarter over the Hornets (20-8). But it was two free throws by Dublin sophomore center Jojuan Carrington with five seconds left that secured the victory.
Dublin forced 17 turnovers on the night, 15 in the first three quarters. When the Gaels' Alanna Yee hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second half, Dublin was up 35-21.
However, Alameda then turned up the pressure. DeJa Johnson had a steal and coast-to-coast layup to get the Hornets started on a quick 6-0 run. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 47-39. Midway through the fourth, it was down to six points. Then to four, then three. Alameda had a shot to cut it to one in the final minute but Tori McGovern missed the shot. The Hornets had to foul and first Moses and then Carrington buried the free throws.
Johnson led Alameda with 19 points. Marie Bertholdt scored 13 and grabbed 16 rebounds, but was held to five of 14 shooting thanks to a tremendous defensive effort by Carrington.
"I'm very proud of them," Hornets coach Brad Thomas said. "We lost four starters last year, came in here and were a four seed. We played (Bishop) O'Dowd 25 minutes of even basketball, one of the best teams in the
Mt. Eden 51, Alameda 49: Jalen Dominique made a layup on a pass from Stevinair Young with 1 second left to give the No. 3 seed Monarchs (18-9) a thrilling win over No. 14 Alameda in North Coast Section Division II first-round playoff action on Feb. 19.
Mt. Eden's final possession started with 25 seconds, and with 11 seconds, Young got the ball near the top of the key. He drove down the left side of the lane and saw a wide-open Dominique, who got the pass and went right up with it.
Alameda (12-15) watched starting 6-foot-3 center Sam Kunz go down with a right ankle injury in the second quarter. He did not return.
Still, the Hornets managed to strike a 10-point lead with just over five minutes left in the game on a bucket from Almir Tudjinovic. But they scored just four points the rest of the way. Meanwhile, paced by Young's six points in the final 3:30, the Monarchs closed the game with a 14-4 run.
Mt. Eden's Noel Briones led all scorers with 17 points, including two free throws that tied the game at 49-49 with 51 second left. Alameda's Chris Bussey scored 15 points and teammate Keelan Doss added 14.
