HAYWARD -- An elderly woman hit and killed by an SUV near Kennedy Park on Thursday night has been identified as 80-year-old Mouang Saechao, the Alameda County Coroner's Office said Friday.

Saechao, who lived at nearby Driftwood Manor at 19700 Hesperian Blvd., was walking in a crosswalk within 100 feet of the care facility just before 7 p.m. when she was hit by a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by 22-year-old Avner Catipon, CHP Officer Eric Morales said. Officers arrived to find the elderly woman lying in the intersection at Hesperian Boulevard and Golf Course Road.

Saechao was taken to Eden Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead of a major head injury, police said. Officials at the nursing home could not immediately be reached for comment.

Catipon stayed on scene and was cooperative with investigators, officials said. He has not been cited in the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
