FREMONT -- A 52-year-old Hayward man found with a serious head injury outside the Fremont BART station last month suffered a medical emergency, police said Friday, and was not the victim of a crime as previously believed.

An investigation revealed that the man received blunt force trauma to the head when he fell while suffering from an undisclosed medical condition, BART police deputy chief Ben Fairow said. A BART employee found the man at 3:20 a.m. Feb. 13.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Eden Hospital before being airlifted to the UC Davis Trauma Center, Fairow said. It is unknown if the man has been released from the hospital, though his condition is no longer critical.

The man was in a coma for more than a week before investigators were able to speak to him, Fairow said. When he finally awoke, he had no memory of that morning.

The incident has been reclassified as a medical emergency, Fairow said, and the investigation has been closed.
