OAKLAND -- An assault rifle stolen from an unmarked San Francisco police car on Saturday was recovered two days later in Oakland, police said Tuesday.

The AR-15 rifle, which was taken from an unmarked car in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood late Saturday night, was found after a during a search of a home in the 1300 block of 88th Avenue in Oakland on Monday night, San Francisco police said.

Police would not elaborate on how the rifle was swiped, but they did say the car was locked and the rifle was not visible from outside the car when it was taken.

San Francisco police said several people were detained when the rifle was found about 9 p.m. Monday, but no one had been arrested in connection with the stolen gun as of Tuesday afternoon.
