Alameda LL Opening Ceremonies this week Alameda Little League will be holding its Opening Ceremonies on March 9, starting with the parade at noon. All teams from T-Ball to Majors will participate. Ceremonies will be held on the Minor field. The parade will be followed by a hot dog lunch for all players. After the ceremonies, teams in Divisions A through Majors will play their first games of the season.
O'Dowd, St. Mary's track teams impress The Bishop O'Dowd High and St. Mary's High track teams had a number of top-three performances at the Sacramento State High School Track Classic on March 2. O'Dowd's Eugene Hamilton III won the 1,500 meters by more than five seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 1.70 seconds, and he was also second in the 400 (49.26). St. Mary's had a number of event winners: Ja'vion Robinson in the boys 110-meter hurdles (15.18 wind-legal), Chloe Jenkins in the girls 800 (2:17.93), Austin Collier in the boys long jump (21 feet, 8 inches wind-legal), Briahn Brown in the girls high jump (5-4) and both the boys 1,600 relay (3:27.03) and girls 1,600 relay (3:58.31) teams. Second-place finishes were achieved by Bishop O'Dowd's girls 1600 relay team (4:05.49) and St. Mary's Carly Schulz in the girls 300 hurdles (45.71). Third-place finishes were achieved by O'Dowd's boys 1,600 relay team (3:29.64), Emily Fieberling in the girls 1,500 (4:50.22), Keisha May in the girls 800 (2:18.82), and Andrew Melendez in the boys 3,000 meters (8:58.49).
Pair of top-two finishes for EC squad The El Cerrito High Mountain Biking Club received a win from Tyler O'Neal in the Sophomore Boys race and a second-place finish from Sean Bennett in the Varsity Boys race at Fort Ord. Molly Radosevich was sixth in the Varsity Girls race for El Cerrito.
On deck California Interscholastic Federation Northern regionals, boys and girls basketball, March 8 or March 9, TBA -- The Bishop O'Dowd boys and girls teams and the St. Mary's girls squad open play in the new Open Division on March 28. O'Dowd will play in a doubleheader at Chabot College, with the girls game at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30. St. Mary's will host Sacramento at 7 p.m. The St. Joseph Notre Dame boys, El Cerrito boys and Piedmont girls have first-round byes and will host quarterfinal games on March 9. Local teams that competed in the first round on March 6 included St. Mary's boys (Division IV), Head-Royce boys (Division V), Berkeley girls (Division I), Oakland Tech girls (Division I), Alameda girls (Division II) and Encinal girls (Division III). Results of the first-round games were unavailable at press time.
Stars of the week Chris Chan, Alameda boys volleyball -- Chan produced nine kills and four aces in a 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Pinole Valley on Feb. 26, then had seven kills, four aces and five digs in a 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 win over St. Joseph Notre Dame on Feb. 28. Temidayo Yussuf, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Yussuf scored a game-high 21 points in the Pilots' 63-56 win over Head-Royce on Feb. 27, then had nine points and 10 rebounds in St. Joseph Notre Dame's 44-38 win over University-S.F. in the North Coast Section Division V championship game on March 2. Ryan Diew, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Diew had a team-high 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, but the Jayhawks lost to St. Joseph Notre Dame 63-56 in an NCS Division V semifinal game on Feb. 27.
