CLAYTON -- A 61-year-old man who had previously obtained a restraining order against his son was found dead at his home late Friday morning, and his son has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Matthew Wester, 22, is being held on $1 million bail in connection with the killing of his father, Richard Wester, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

Sheriff's deputies went to the 400 block of Meadow View Lane, which is off Morgan Territory Road in a semirural area outside of Clayton, at 11:06 a.m. Friday after receiving a call about a person who was unconscious and not breathing.

When deputies arrived, paramedics had already pronounced Wester dead. It is unknown how Wester died. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, the Sheriff's Office said.

Matthew Wester, who was at the home, was interviewed by detectives and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on one count of murder, according to the Sheriff's Office.

According to documents filed with the Contra Costa County Superior Court, Richard Wester was granted a restraining order against his son in June 2010. The restraining order was set to expire on June 1, 2011. Wester did not appear to have renewed the order.

The killing marked a jarring contrast to the otherwise serene but remote area just outside of the tiny burg of Clayton.

Wester's home lies on a dirt road, surrounded by trees and green fields. Few neighbors live in the area, and the beginning of the road that leads back to the home where police and emergency crews responded is marked only by four white mailboxes and a street sign.

Little else is known about the family. Calls to Wester's home and to neighbors were not returned.
