CONCORD -- A suspect who pulled a knife on an employee while robbing a Concord shoe store Sunday night didn't get far before being nabbed, police said.

The 25-year-old man, who was not identified because the case is still under investigation, crossed all lanes of a major freeway attempting to escape but was arrested after a short search using police dogs, Concord police Lt. Robin Heinemann said.

Police said the man entered Shiekh Shoes at Sunvalley mall about 7:13 p.m. and took some shoes. A store employee confronted the man, who brandished the knife and ran away, Heinemann said.

The man ran across Interstate 680 and headed toward Diamond Boulevard, Heinemann said. Police dogs tracked the man to a Chevron Station at 2001 Willow Pass Road.

Witnesses from the store later identified the man as the robbery suspect, Heinemann said.
