DALY CITY -- Police have arrested a 28-year-old Sunnyvale man on suspicion of three counts of homicide in connection with a fatal traffic collision Saturday that killed three people and badly injured a fourth.
Denis Pereirade Macedo was taken into custody Saturday night not long after a violent two-vehicle crash in the 100 block of Eastmoor Avenue, authorities said. The San Mateo County Coroner's Office identified the victims Monday as Daly City residents Josefa Osorio Acevedo, 50; Amado Osorio Acevedo, 23; and Josue Osorio, 15.
Daly City police have released few details about the wreck, which occurred around 8:10 p.m. San Mateo County District AttorneySteve Wagstaffe said Monday that police have yet to refer the case to his office. He said the victims were family members, but he did not know exactly how they were related.
It appears Macedo was driving recklessly, said Wagstaffe, noting that the driver faces a possible misdemeanor hit-and-run charge for striking a parked vehicle sometime before the fatal collision.
"He was driving at excessive speed," Wagstaffe said of Macedo, "and collided with the other vehicle as it was turning."
Wagstaffe declined to say whether Macedo was driving under the influence, adding that the matter remains under investigation.
"By Tuesday we should know more," Wagstaffe said. "With three people dead, this is a remarkably serious event that we will be treating very carefully."
The fourth victim of the crash remains hospitalized.
Macedo is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in San Mateo County Superior Court in Redwood City.
