A Sonoma County woman was killed and three passengers severely injured when a car careened off northbound lanes of the freeway near the Marin County line, flipped over and rolled into a ditch early Wednesday.
Authorities from several agencies rushed to search for the accident site after a passing motorist called in to report a car rolled off the highway "somewhere between northern Novato and Petaluma," according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Andrew Barclay.
The driver, whose identity was withheld pending notification of relatives, was killed. Two passengers with "major injuries" were taken to Santa Rosa Community Hospital, and one passenger with "critical" injuries was taken to Marin General Hospital.
"We're trying to identify them right now," Barclay said Wednesday morning.
He said the car swerved off the freeway, rolled over and came to rest in a ditch near the northbound lanes of Highway 101 near the Marin-Sonoma border.
Novato fire and county sheriff's deputies joined CHP officers at the scene.
