Kitten season is right around the corner, and Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) is getting ready for the onslaught of little babies that will come through the shelter doors this spring.

FAAS just received a wonderful donation of a small building that will become the "Kitten Kottage" when it is fully equipped. Kittens waiting for their new home will be housed in the Kottage for viewing by potential adopters. FAAS is also looking for foster families to take underage kittens into their homes and provide them with tender loving care until they are old enough to be adopted into their permanent homes. FAAS takes in abandoned kittens of all ages, from a few days old to several weeks, and they need to be fostered until they are 8 weeks or older.

At that time, they can be spayed/neutered and are ready for adoption. FAAS provides kitten food and formula, litter and advice and pays for any medical care needed while kittens are being fostered. Fosters are asked to provide a warm safe space for the kittens (away from other pets in the home) and give them lots of tender loving care.

The results of Bay Woof's popular Beast of the Bay Awards are in, and FAAS was runner-up in two categories -- "Best Thing to Happen to Bay Area Dogs in 2012" and "Best Canine Sports Event" for Wiggle Waggle Walk. FAAS wants to thank everyone who voted and made FAAS a Bay Area winner.
