Mark Green was termed out of the mayor's chair in December, leaving him without a position in Union City government for the first time in a quarter-century. But the community on Wednesday let Green know he's not forgotten, as a ceremony was held in honor of naming the city's sports center after him.
The building, which has fitness areas and a gymnasium, is now known as the Mark Green Sports Center.
Green, who served as mayor from 1993-2012, was instrumental in getting the athletic facility built, Union City spokeswoman Rhea Serran said. When the city conducted its park and recreation master plan in the late 1990s, Green insisted that a sports center be a top priority for future development, Serran said.
During his 19 years in office, he was a tireless champion of athletics, recreation and physical fitness programs, as well as the development of city parks. He often sprinkled sports references in his speeches to lighten the mood at public events.
The athletic facility, which opened in 2007 at 31224 Union City Blvd., was first named the Union City Sports Center. It has become a popular addition to the community, with Green being one of its most frequent customers, Serran said.
Oakland to open first sculpture park
A little bit of Burning Man is coming to Oakland next month, and mercifully it won't include nonstop electronic music.
The city is partnering with several arts organization's including
The first exhibition at the Uptown ArtPark will include nine sculptures made by local artists. The feature work is "Bike Bridge," a 20-by-20-foot sculpture made of recycled bike parts by Berkeley artist Michael Christian and 12 Oakland high school students.
The sculptures will line Telegraph Avenue between 19th and William streets and 19th Street between Telegraph and Rashidah Muhammad Street.
The city has funding to rotate exhibits at the site for three years thanks in part to a $200,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The ArtPark's grand opening is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 5 and will include music and food trucks.
