OAKLAND -- Following an approximately eight-hour standoff that started early Sunday, police arrested a suspect in a shooting that left a 27-year-old man dead and another seriously wounded, authorities said.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested around 8 a.m. in a yard next to the three-story home on the 1400 block of 25th Avenue where the shooting occurred, police said.

At least six other people were detained by police for questioning, and police were still interviewing them Sunday evening.

The standoff with Oakland police officers began after the 1:20 a.m. shooting, police said.

The dead man's name was not immediately released. A person drove him to the hospital, where he died, police said. Investigators didn't say what sparked the violence.

The SWAT team was called to the house around 4:50 a.m. and police stayed there until 12:30 p.m.

The killing was Oakland's 18th homicide of the year. There were 24 homicides in Oakland this time last year.
