PALO ALTO -- Police believe a San Jose man arranged to meet a woman for massage services she had advertised online, then threatened her with a knife, robbed her and forced her to perform a sex act with him in a budget motel room earlier this month.
Palo Alto detectives arrested David Yi, 44, for two outstanding warrants related to a probation violation and an assault with a deadly weapon on Friday in San Jose. He has since been charged with robbery, attempted robbery and forcible oral copulation related to events that police said took place at the Glass Slipper Inn on El Camino Real in Palo Alto on March 9.
According to police, the suspect in that case called the victim and they agreed to meet at a room at the hotel. Once there, "the man immediately produced a knife and ordered the victim to give him all of her money," according to a news release. "After she complied, he ordered her to participate in a sex act with him."
When the suspect left the hotel room, he ran into an associate of the victim, sitting in a chair outside the room. He again brandished the knife -- which detectives described only as "very large" -- and demanded money but she didn't have anything to give him so he fled on foot.
Detectives identified the suspect as Yi, who was on probation from a prior conviction related to the possession of methamphetamine and being under the influence of narcotics.
Palo Alto detective Sgt. Brian Philip wouldn't specify how Yi was identified but did say a surveillance photo that was obtained and released "was one part of the puzzle."
He said Yi was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop.
While police do not believe there is a link between the motel robbery and other recent reported robberies in Palo Alto, Philip said it's possible that Yi might be responsible for other crimes.
"At this point I don't know if there are other victims out there, but that's absolutely something we're following up on," Philip said.
