HAYWARD -- A Starbucks customer was recently stabbed in the face during an early morning robbery attempt at a downtown outlet, police said.

Officers responded to a 5:30 a.m. call for or an assault with a deadly weapon at the busy coffee shop in the 700 block of A Street on March 14 and found the injured victim, said Sgt. Mark Ormsby.

The victim told police that a suspect -- later identified as Andrew Whitten, 28, of Oakland -- approached him and stabbed him in the face during a robbery attempt. The victim was not seriously injured, police said.

Whitten, a prison parolee, did not get any cash and fled the scene. He was located a short time later and arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Whitten was also identified as a suspect in another strong-arm robbery at Green Shutter Hotel on Main Street, Ormsby said. Police said he stole a man's wallet and got away with $2.
