ALAMEDA -- A fire at a home caused at least $500,000 in damage and killed two family pets, a fire department spokesman said Thursday afternoon.

Two adults and two children escaped the house unharmed, said Alameda Fire Capt. Jim Colburn.

The family dog and cat were found dead in the home, Colburn said.

Two firefighters were injured and treated at the scene.

The cause of the fire in the 1300 block of Eighth Street near Washington Park has not been determined. The fire caused at least $350,000 in damage to the home and $150,000 in damage to its contents, Colburn said.

The fire broke out at 12:37 p.m. and was knocked down by 12:54 p.m. Eighth Street, which was closed for several hours, has reopened.
