OAKLAND -- A 29-year-old Castro Valley man was killed early Sunday morning after being hit by paratransit van as he ran across eastbound Interstate 580 near the Dutton Avenue off-ramp in Oakland, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.
The man, who name is not being released until his family is notified, was running across I-580 at about 12:18 a.m. from the center median where his car was stopped, the CHP said.
The driver of the paratransit van told CHP officers that he was driving at about 65 m.p.h. when saw the Hispanic man running across the freeway but couldn't stop in time to avoid him.
The accident closed three lanes of eastbound I-580 for about an hour early Sunday morning. All lanes were reopened at about 2 a.m.
The CHP is continuing to investigate the accident.
The Alameda County Coroner's Office will attempted to contact the victim's family today.
