SAN LEANDRO -- A man killed after being hit by paratransit van as he ran across eastbound Interstate 580 near the Dutton Avenue off-ramp early Sunday has been identified as 30-year-old Esequiel Perez Jr., an Alameda County Coroner's Office spokesman said.
Perez of Castro Valley was running across I-580 at about 12:18 a.m. from the center median where his car was stopped, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the van told officers that he was driving at about 65 mph when saw Perez running across the freeway but said he couldn't stop in time to avoid him.
The crash closed three lanes of the freeway for about an hour early Sunday morning. All lanes were reopened at about 2 a.m.
The CHP continued to investigate the accident on Monday.
